We thank the, O God, for a prophet
To guide us in these latter days.
We thank thee for sending the gospel
To lighten our minds with its rays.
We thank thee for every blessing
Bestowed by thy bounteous hand.
We feel it a pleasure to serve thee,
And love to obey thy command.
I will forever think of President Gordon B. Hinckley when I hear the words to this song. What an amazing man we had at the head of our church for so many years. This song is embedded in my head as I remember a fireside I attended back in my college days watching it Via Satellite from Utah. During the fireside a man with a gun entered the building to approach President Hinckley and as security struggled to get this matter under control and the satellite TV was turned off, we sat stunned and began singing this amazing song as did all those present in the conference center. The spirit that was felt was amazing and how grateful we are that President Hinckley was allowed to serve for so many more years.
There are so many things I will remember about this man, but I love most how he spoke of temples and how we will be better people if we attend them often. What a blessing it is, to have been the instrument in so many temples being built all over the world. One of my most favorite quotes by President Hinckley is
“…we will be a better people, we will be better fathers and husbands, we will be better wives and mothers. I make you a promise that if you will go to the house of the Lord, you will be blessed, life will be better for you.”
We are truly a blessed generation to have seen his smile, wit, and humor twice a year and to know without a doubt that he is a Prophet of God. He will be missed, but what a blessing to explain to our children and to know that he is in Heaven with his Eternal Companion and his work here on earth is complete. How I love President Hinckley and his impact on my life.
