Short Lived - Retirement

So most of you know I retired this year as an elementary PE teacher after 9 years at the same school. Schools in Gilbert have been back in for 8 days now and I have enjoyed my 6 days off. Yes only 6 days. A PE teacher from another school had a family emergency so he asked me to sub for him this past Thursday and Friday. It was fun to do, different because I was at another school and I didn't know any of the kids, but it was certainly clear to me that I STILL LOVE TEACHING PE. I am so glad that I quit working because it was time for me to. Not because I didn't love my job. I really do love what I do.

So that being said: I Got a crazy phone call on Wednesday morning on my way to the temple. I am told....There is a school in Gilbert that has 2 PE classes extra and no one to take them. They can't use a normal traveling PE teacher because this school is one of 5 "pilot" schools trying out a new schedule the district is trying to implement for next year. This Principal asked if I would be willing to come back and take two 40 minute classes every Monday morning from 9:05-10:30 at this school. hmmm I asked her if she could contact the district and to email to me what kind of pay I would receive and told her I needed to talk about it with my husband.

Josh and I played around with numbers and tried to guess what they might come up with. We came in with a target dollar amount that we thought would make it worth it for me to drive back up there to teach for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Remember I was already planning to sub in Chandler 1-2 days a week, so there was a lot to consider.

I received an email from the Assistant Superintendent Friday evening when I had returned home from a night out. She explained how they came up with their numbers taking into account my 10th year now in the district, and the # of minutes I would be teaching each week and presented me with a contact for the year.

Well lets just say that the daily rate for my 80 minutes of teaching on a Monday was much higher than we had guessed, and we realized very quickly that not only would this rate be consistent every two weeks of pay, but I would also be getting this pay over October Break, Christmas Break, Spring Break, and because it is only Mondays I will be teaching, I will be getting Labor Day, Martin Luther King, and President's Day off as well. Pay still included.

This will be a much better deal than subbing twice a week. We feel VERY BLESSED to have this opportunity to do this, and yet I still have the choice to sub any other day of the week if I choose to do so.

So...8 days into my retirement, I am officially UN-Retired. I will now be teaching on an 8 % contract for 80 minutes every Monday. Yahoo for me.

That's awesome Shanen! Sounds like the perfect set up for you. Maybe we should have an "out-of-retirement" party for you now! :)

I remember when I stopped working full time, I had to get something to do at home to keep my brain working. Good for you! I wish I was home more when my kids were little, I kind of did it backwards.

That's amazing, Shanen! What a great way to do what you love and bring in some extra cash! I love when I can see the hand of the Lord in my everyday life like that. Humbling to know that He cares about things like that.

That's so great! It's nice to always have something consistent, but still have the time to sub more if you want. Are you teaching in the mornings or afternoons? I'm so glad this worked out for you so well!

What a perfect situation! It's so nice that you can still do something that you enjoy (and get payed for it) and it's only one day a week, how perfect!
