Basketball Camp

Kylee is my oldest and at this point most athletic. Not that that can't change, but she is just an all around athletic kid. She loves to run, play soccer, softball, and basketball. I grew up running, playing soccer, and softball, but basketball???....was not my favorite. I didn't even like it. I think I had an issue with the contact. But none the less, it was not my game of choice. Kylee however, LOVES basketball. Last year in 1st grade she took her basketball to school almost everyday. She played with the boys at recess and at lunch, and would dribble the ball all the way home. And she is good. I have never signed her up for WHAM, I just wasn't interested. Ya I know..like it's all about me, but either way, I didn't sign her up.

Expect...last summer my nephew(same age at Kylee) went to Basketball Camp for a week at his school. My sister said it was pretty cheap, and Cole loved it. We talked about it near the end of this school year, and finally the flyer came. I got a copy and we decided to sign the kids up together. We chose this week, 4th of July, because it was only 4 days, and less money. Camp is every morning from 8:00-11:30 for $44. Cheap!!!! only $11 a day for 3 1/2 hours and it includes a shirt.

Kylee was SO EXCITED this morning. She was up and dressed at 6:09 (she told me since I was still sleeping) and she just couldn't wait to go. We got her there, checked her in, and we came back home.

I went back to pick her up and she looked tired, but her smile was big, and she had a medal around her neck. A medal?? I looked at her and said "A medal already?" thinking that was something that they all would have received on Thursday. The girl standing at the door said "yep, she did great today."

We got in the car and I wanted to hear all about it. She was talking so fast and telling me so many things they did. She could remember EVERY detail. It wasn't like after a day at school when you are asking a zillion questions to try and figure out what they did all day. She remembered it all. You could just hear the excitement in her voice.

So here are the important details:

  • Divided into 2 groups (K-3, and 4-6)

  • She was the ONLY GIRL in the K-3 group

  • That didn't bother her, she met a new friend Nate who is really good

  • Chest passes, Bounce passes and Over Head passes

  • Dribble

  • Pass with a partner, Cole was hers.

  • Shoot baskets

  • Play a game with teams taking turns

I guess everything about it was great. At the end they all sat down. One of the "coaches" said that each day they were gonna pick someone that did a great job that day and that person gets a medal. They said Kylee's name first. She got to stand up and go get her medal. Then they picked someone from the older group and he got a medal also.

She was thrilled. She was actually a little bit shy about it. She said, she said thank you and sat down quietly. She usually is that way when put into the spotlight, but then when she gets to talk about it, you can hear it in her voice and see it in her eyes that she was really happy.

I am so glad she had fun. She can't wait to go back tomorrow.

Wow! You go Kylee! It's so great to hear that she loves playing...especially being the only girl at camp!....I'm guessing you and Josh need to start saving up for Kylee's Olympic trials in several events in the not to distant future!!!!
